A terraced sports facility embedded into the hills of Cebu, designed to work with the slope rather than against it. The project balances athletic performance and social spaces through careful sectional planning and contextual restraint.

Brief
Lava Tennis is a hillside sports facility located on a sloping vacant plot in Cebu. The client’s brief required two covered tennis courts, supported by a facility building that houses a café and dining area, office, merchandise store, storage areas, viewing deck, and parking. Beyond the program, the client envisioned the courts as a destination in the hills—terraced, open, and social— where playing, spectating, and gathering coexist within a single environment.
Strategy
The courts were placed on stepped levels, allowing the terrain to guide the layout. A single support building was positioned alongside the courts, with dining spaces oriented toward both playing areas. Red and clay accents contrast with white surfaces, while stone-clad foundations anchor the project to the hillside.
Reflection
This project emphasizes context-driven planning—allowing the site to shape the architecture while keeping the courts as the clear priority. It reinforced the value of sectional thinking and restraint in creating cohesive recreational spaces.
