Reimagining a former wet park into a civic landscape dedicated to childhood, memory, and community life. The project transforms an underutilized public space into a contemporary children’s park that preserves its past while shaping new experiences for future generations.

Brief

Developed in collaboration with Stick Studio (CDO), the project involves the redevelopment of an existing wet park—previously functioning as a gathering space and retention pond—into the city’s new Children’s Park. The brief emphasized retaining key existing structures, including the amphitheater and wet ponds, while addressing current challenges and redefining the park as a safe, active, and meaningful public space for the community.

Strategy

Our design strategy focused on consolidation and re-zoning. The park was reorganized into four quadrants centered around the existing amphitheater, establishing it as the heart of the site. By reworking the amphitheater’s seating and enveloping it with sloping landscape mounds, we transformed it into a sunken, mound-formed amphitheater that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding terrain. This approach preserved existing structures while creating new spatial relationships, clearer circulation, and dedicated zones for play, gathering, and recreation—encouraging families and children to spend meaningful time in the park.

Reflection

This project reflects a belief that childhood memories shape who we become. By shifting focus toward the youth, the redevelopment gives new life to an old park—turning it into a landscape of curiosity, freedom, and shared experiences. It stands as a reminder that public spaces, when thoughtfully designed, can become lasting foundations for collective memory and civic identity.
